BENGAL TO BETHNAL GREEN

Grand Union Orchestra presents
BENGAL TO BETHNAL GREEN
SUNDAY 5 MARCH

IN A NUTSHELL
Monthly concerts featuring much loved singers and musicians reflecting the wide variety of music flourishing in London’s East End today.
GO ON..
The Grand Union Orchestra tours nationally and internationally, but has always been based in East London. The regular Bengal to Bethnal Green programme therefore has a special place in its heart! Tabla maestro Yousuf Ali Khan – a much valued GUO member for over 25 years – is hugely popular in the local community, and brings the cream of local Bengali artists to perform in these shows. What makes them different is that they are supported by Grand Union musicians from other parts of the world – Africa, South America, Eastern Europe, the Caribbean – so traditional Bengali song and light classical ragas mingle with West African drumming and chant, reggae and calypso, salsa and samba.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Bengali songs and South Asian classical music both in traditional form, and combined with elements of African, Caribbean and South American music, performed by musicians expert in them – and a correspondingly mixed and highly enthusiastic audience.
WHO’S INVOLVED
Grand Union Orchestra

‘It is very important to Grand Union to produce cross-generational work in Tower Hamlets that reflects the diversity of the Borough and has a broad appeal to local residents. ‘Bengal to Bethnal Green’ would not be possible without the generosity and commitment of Rich Mix.’
